Ebook About
Leaving behind a sparkling social life and a successful journalism career, Eleni Gage moved from New York City to the remote Greek village of Lia. Lia is the same village where her father was born and her grandmother murdered, and which her father, Nicholas Gage, made famous twenty years ago with his international bestseller Eleni. Her four aunts (the diminutive but formidable thitsas) warned Eleni that she'd get killed by Albanians and eaten by wolves if she moved to Lia, invoking the curse her grandmother placed on any of her descendants who returned to Greece. But Eleni was determined to rebuild the ruins of her grandparents' house and to come to terms with her family's tragic history. Along the way, she learned to dodge bad omens and to battle the scorpions on her pillow and the shadows in her heart. She also came to understand that Greece and its memories were not only dark and death-filled, and that memories of the dead can bring new life to the present.Part travel memoir and part family saga, North of Ithaka is, above all, a journey home.

Book North of Ithaka: A Journey Home Through a Family's Extraordinary Past Review :

I read the Gage family story backward, beginning with this story told by Eleni's namesake and granddaughter, about her return to the Greek village of Lia to rebuild the family’s ruined home and come to terms with a family tragedy: at the end of Greece’s civil war, Yiayia Eleni was imprisoned and tortured in her own home that had become the guerilla prison. The year in Lia turns out to be cathartic for all involved. Ms. Gage explores the tragedy of the past, but also the joys of village life. Whether you are part of or have contact with the Greek diaspora, or are simply interested in other cultures, there is much to learn and enjoy in her description of daily life in Lia, Greece. One disappointment is her description of Orthodox Christianity as just another superstition, thrown in with coffee ground fortune telling, the evil eye, pagan rituals, etc. Her description implies that Orthodoxy is meaningful as folklore, no more nor less. No doubt Ms. Gage is not alone in her perspective (in Greece or elsewhere), but for readers who hold their Orthodox faith as something life-giving and true, it can be troubling in this aspect. This book made me curious about the first part of the Gage family history, told in Eleni and a Place for Us, by Ms. Gage's father, Nicholas Gage. They are both outstanding, and this is a nice companion, though much more lighthearted and warm than the intensity of suffering in the first part of the family story.
This is a book written by Eleni Gage, the granddaughter of the original Eleni Gatzoyiannis who was murdered by the Communists after World War II. It is the story of how Miss Gage rebuilds her grandmother's house in the village of Lia in northern Greece. It's an interesting look at village life in modern Greece. It's so admirable that Eleni Gage actually lives in her house in Lia, Greece for a portion of every year. A nice conclusion to the Gatzoyiannis/Gage family drama.
